Canoeing

Canoeing was once the primary mode of long-distance transportation across the globe. Technology has replaced canoes with motor boats and other transportation methods.  But canoeing is still popular as a water sport event.

History

Canoeing as a water sport was popularised by Scottish explorer John MacGregor (1825–1892), after he went off to a camping expedition to Canada and got acquainted to kayaks and canoes. Back in the U.K. he made and popularised his own canoes and in 1866, founded a canoe club titled The Royal Canoe Club.

Olympics

The first known competition in canoeing was in 1974, and called the Paddling Challenge Cup. In 1924, some European countries formed what would be the precursor of the International Canoe Federation. But it was at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 that canoeing first made its appearance as an event. Racing is the main sport in this event, and sometimes, other styles are also played like polo, surf skiing, extreme racing, play-boating and so on.

Often, the terms canoeing and kayaking come to mean the same, even in terms of competition. The notable difference is in the competition kayaks, which are always seated and paddled with a double-bladed paddle, whereas competition canoes are generally kneeled and paddled with a single-bladed paddle. But there are exceptions, as in the Canoe Marathon and sprint.

Kayaking

Kayaking is distinguished from canoeing by how the paddler sits and the number of blades on the paddle.

History
Kayak was first made by the Arctic people, the Inuits. These were from wooden frames and covered in sealskin. They incorporated a little hole in the centre of craft for the user to sit in and these little boats were mainly used for hunting. Each region had a different design for the kayak.

The material to make a kayak has altered considerably over the years. The European settlers started using fabric instead of skin to cover the wooden frame. In 1950 fibre-glass was introduced as material for building kayaks, and in 1984, the first plastic kayak was made. The kayaks of now are sturdy, light, and very versatile.

Olympics

Kayaking was first a demo event in the 1924 Paris Olympics. And it really came to Olympics in Berlin in 1936, and there were four events, the single and pair’s 1000-meter and 10000-meter race. The white-water race and slalom events were added later.
