Football

Football could be just ‘football’ or "soccer."  It’s a sport where a ball is kicked with the foot to score a goal.

History

FIFA says the competitive ‘cuju’ or kick ball could have been our earliest form of football. Cuju is an exercise in a martial handbook from the 2 B.C.-3 B.C. period in China.  In this a leather ball was required to be kicked through a small hole in a piece of silk cloth; the latter was fixed on bamboo canes and hung about 9 m above ground.  History has, likewise, references to many ball games played by various peoples in various parts of the world.

Olympics

The 1896 Olympics did not include football as an event, the game was then in its infancy. There are unconfirmed references, but, to an unofficial tournament in Athens 1896. 1900, 1904 and the Intercalated Games of 1906.
Tournaments were played at the 1900 and 1904 games and the 1906 Intercalated Games and contested by clubs and local teams. These are recognised by IOC but not so by FIFA, both ignore the Intercalated Games.  Association football, or football/soccer, has been a Summer Olympic event in all years except 1896 and 1932 for Men. Women's football came in only in 1996.
