Gymnastics

Gymnastics involves performance of exercises needing physical vigour, suppleness, power, nimbleness, coordination, poise, stability and control. Competitive artistic gymnastics is the best known of gymnastic events. This consists of the women's events of uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and vault, and the men's events of floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and the high bar.  The FédérationInternationale de Gymnastique, (FIG) founded in 1881 at Leige, governs all competitive gymnastic events.

History

Ancient Greeks used exercises similar to gymnastics. But gymnastics is said to have been created originally as exercises for young men and boys on self-designed equipment developed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Germany, by physical educators GutsMuths and Jahn.

Olympics

The 1896 Olympics of 1896 at Athens had the men's gymnastics competition, and until the early 1950s, the competitions involved varying variety of exercises collectively called gymnastics. There was jumping, horizontal ladder, running, rope climbing and of course, synchronized team floor calisthenics, rope climbing, high jumping, running, and horizontal ladder. In 1928, the women gymnastic events came up, and involved only track and field and synchronized calisthenics.

Other gymnastic disciplines broadly consist of rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining, Team Gym, tumbling, aerobic gymnastics and acrobatic gymnastics.
