Netball is derived from the first versions of basketball played in the 1890s and is now a ball sport played by two seven-member teams. International rules were standardised for netball by about 1960.

History

Netball evolved with an increase in the number of sportswomen. In the initial versions of basketball, developed by Naismith, it was played indoors between two nine-player-teams of nine players, using a football thrown into closed-end peach baskets. In 1892, Senda Berenson modified these rules for women and resulted in women's basketball.

In 1893, Martina Bergman-Österberg launched a version of basketball to her female students in a London college. The rules of the game evolved over the years, and the game was finally played on grass, outdoors. And rings came in place of the baskets, and women's basketball rules were incorporated with a new name, "net ball". The first rules of netball were codified in 1901 and it spread to the British colonies. It was considered a sport just right for women, with its restricted movements, and became very popular internationally.

Olympics

In 1995, the International Olympic Committee accepted netball as an Olympic recognized sport.
