History of the sport

Rowing as a sport originated in Ancient Egypt. A boat is propelled on water using oars by pushing against water. The sport achieved popularity in United Kingdom when professional boatmen started racing each other over wagers. The Doggett’s Coat and badge racing started in 1715 is still an annual event on the Thames. The sport was introduced in India by early British settlers. The first racing club was started at Calcutta in 1868. The Rowing Federation of India was born in 1976 when ten gentlemen from rowing clubs of Calcutta and Madras decided to form an association.

Olympics

Rowing has been part of Olympics since its debut in 1976. Only men were allowed to compete till 1976. 14 competition categories are offered in Olympics in lightweight and normal categories. Germany dominates the event with 33 gold medals won over the years. International Rowing Federation (FISA in French) governs the event and was the first International Sports Association to join the modern Olympic movement.
