Table Tennis

Table tennis or ping-pong is played across a net on a hard table, and two or four players hit a lightweight ball to and fro with a racket.  TT demands a quick reflex and fast play, so it needs a sharp skill set to be proficient, including spinning ability and great concentration. The player allows a ball played toward them one bounce on their side of the table and returns it so that it bounces on the opposite side. This is except for the initial serve. When a player fails to return the ball within the rules, a point is scored.  A player can also spin the ball to change its line of flight and give the hitter good advantage. There is a good chance of scoring if the spin is successful.

History
In the 1880s, TT was played within upper-class society as a parlour game after dinner and parties.  It’s even thought that the military officers who served in the British Colonies in India and South Africa played TT in a crude form using books both as rackets and net and brought the game back home. The ball used then was a golf ball. TT was also supposed to have been played with cigar box lids as paddles and of champagne corks as balls. Commerce picked up on manufacturing TT equipment when popularity of the game grew over the century.  Soon books were being written about TT and tournaments were organised at international levels.

In the 1950s, new type of rackets using rubber sheets with an core sponge layer transformed the game. This put in more spin and great speed.

Olympics
Table tennis came in as an Olympic sport in 1988. There are currently 4 events: the Men’s and Women’s singles and team events.
