A triathlon involves the completion of three continuous and chronological endurance disciplines. Triathlon involves swimming, cycling, and running in direct succession over a range of distances. Triathletes look to complete in the fastest overall time, including timed "transitions" between the individual swim, cycle, and run components. The word "triathlon" is from Greek treis (three) and athlos (contest).

History
Triathlon probably began in 1920 in France at a race in the 1920s–1930s which is even now held every year in France near Joinville-le-Pont. A 1902 tri-sport event featured running, cycling, and canoeing. Other documented tri-sport events have featured running, swimming, & cycling in subsequent years. The first probable modern event was held in 1974 at San Diego.

Olympics
Triathlon first appeared in the 2000 Summer Olympics, and there were 52 men and 48 women competing in separate triathlons.
