Rajani gets Kerala its 15th Gold as Cycling gets under way

V. Rajani of Kerala won Kerala's 15th gold in the National Games by emerging as the winner in the 72 KM Road Mass start event this morning.

Himarani of Haryana won silver and Anjita T.P of Kerala bagged the bronze.

134 athletes representing ten States are taking part in the cycling competitions. Cycling offers a total of 60 medals in gold, silver and bronze from 20 events which include 16 individual and 4 team events. 
 

Day Six: Prakash’s 6th gold, Karmakar’s 5th, Services SSB breaks away

The tiny State of Tripura has won just five medals so far, all of them gold, and all of them won by one individual. Commonwealth Games bronze medallist gymnast Dipa Karmakar has taken the Gymnastics arena by storm, excelling with a haul of five gold medals in all the five events she has participated, a unique achievement.
 

Karmakar, the first Indian woman gymnast to fetch a Commonwealth Games medal, was way ahead of competition as she clinched gold in individual all-round, table vault, balancing beam, uneven parallel bars and floor exercises.
 

Land-locked States win gold in Beach Hand Ball

Chhattisgarh and Delhi, land-locked States without a beach, surprised all by lifting the Beach Handball men’s and women’s titles respectively at Trivandrum on Thursday.

Chhattisgarh beat Gujarat by 2-0 in the men’s finals. Earlier in the semi-finals, Chhattisgarh beat Delhi by 2-1 and Kerala was beaten by Gujarat 2-0.

Delhi beat Chhattisgarh 2-0 in the women’s final. 

 

Maharashtra wins Kho-kho, spoils shared in Lawn Bowls

Kerala lost narrowly to Maharashtra in both finals of the Kho-kho competition at Attingal, near Trivandrum.

Maharashtra won 14-12 in the men’s final. The margin was even thinner in the women’s final, 11-10.

Lawn Bowls
Four States, namely Jharkhand, Delhi, West Bengal and Assam took home a gold medal each from the Lawn Bowls competition.

 

Andhra and Kerala triumph in Beach Volleyball

Andhra Pradesh beat its new neighbour Telengana 18-21, 21-17, 15-10 in the men’s final of Beach Volleyball at Kozhikode.

In the women’s category, Kerala got gold beating Andhra Pradesh in straight sets 23-21, 21-19 after an entertaining and closely fought affair.

This was Kerala’s 13h Gold at the Games, and for Andhra its 3rd.

Tamil Nadu rule the roost in Table Tennis

Tamil Nadu, who won the men’s team title in Table Tennis two days ago, triumphed in both individul singles competitions.

Amalraj Antony beat Harmeet Desai of Gujarat to lift the men’s singles title, while Shamini Kumaresan downed Ankita Das of West Bengal after a titanic struggle in the women’s final 7-11, 6-11, 10-12, 11-3, 11-3, 11-9, 11-6. Earlier Shamini had beaten Mouma Das of West Bengal in the semi-finals and Ankita Das got the better of Madhurika Patkar of Maharashtra.

Hosts Kerala eliminated from men’s football

Gloom descended on much of Kerala’s sporting fraternity as the home team failed to reach the knock-out round of the men’s football competition despite winning their first two games, when they lost 0-2 to Goa in its final group match today and went out on goal difference.
 

Day 5: Gold rush for Kerala as rowers also come good

Kerala clinched three gold medals from the rowing events at the Vembanad lake in Alleppey on Thursday.

Dittymol Varghese was the standout star of the day again, triumphing in the women's Single Sculls 500m event and in the Double Sculls 500m event where she teamed up with Thara Kurian.

Kerala's third gold of the day came in the Women's Coxless Four 500m event with Aswany Anilkumar, Nimmy Thomas, Anjali Raj and Honey Joseph emerging as winners.

Both Netball gold medals clinched by Haryana, Bronze for Kerala

Haryana clinched both men and women gold in Net Ball today at Vellayani, Trivandrum. In the men’s finals, Haryana men beat Punjab 58-53 while the women had it much easier against Karnataka 53-37. 

Kerala won an unexpected medal by defeating Karnataka 43-38 in the men's bronze medal play-off. And, Punjab won the women's bronze medal tie 42-21 over Delhi.

Day 4: Just a solitary gold for Kerala, gulf widens with top 3

Haryana continued to rule the wrestling pit to take home 5 out of 6 gold medals at stake on Wednesday and reach a tally of 21 Gold, 18 of which are from wrestling. Matching the gold quest was Services, also with 21 Gold, 9 of which are from Shooting and 5 in Rowing. In 3rd place is Maharashtra, 14 gold inclusive of 9 from Aquatics, 3 in Shooting and 2 in Table tennis.

Kerala narrowly held on to its 4th place, but won only one swimming gold, through Sajan Prakash, during the day. Close on its heels, also with 7 Gold, are Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
