Haryana set to dominate boxing

Over 160 boxers have already accredited themselves for the Games, including 104 men and 59 women, for the competitions to be held at Triprayar in Trichur district from Feb 6 to 13.

 

Many of the top boxers of the country including Olympians Sumit Sangwan, Jitender and Manoj Kumar have already confirmed their participation. All of them represent Haryana in the Games.

 

Shooting Range will host 2 more events after the Games

Shooting offers a total of 114 medals from 38 events at the National Games, the largest number of medals offered by any sport other than Aquatics and Athletics.

 

Several leading shooters have confirmed their participation. They include Jitu Rai, Hariom Singh and Sathyendra Singh, all from SSCB, Ninad Chaudari (Maharashtra), Ishan Goel (UP), Navdeep Singh Rathore (MP) and B.K. Sidhartha Babu (Kerala) among men, and Anjum Moudgil (Haryana), Elizabeth Susan Koshy (Kerala), Chahat Deep Kaur (Punjab) and Tejswini R Sawant (MH) among women.

 

Top squash players confirm participation

A total of 63 men players and 40 women players have been accredited so far for the Squash competitions of the National Games. Prominent star including Saurav Ghosal, Harinder Singh Pal Sandhu and Joshna Chinnappa have confirmed their participation. The notable absentee is Deepika Pallikal, India’s no 1 woman.

 

Venkaiah Naidu is chief guest for Opening Ceremony, Anju and Usha to light flame

M. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister for Urban Development, will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the 35th National Games to be held at the new Karyavattom Greenfield Stadium in Trivandrum on January 31.

The Games will be covered 24X7 by DD Sports, the dedicated sports channel of the country’s national broadcaster Doordarshan, who is the Games’ host producer and broadcaster. There will be no other programmes on the channel for 15 days, other than a couple of its regular sports news.

 

Torch Relay commences at Kasargode

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy handed over the National Games torch to volleyball player Tom Joseph at Kasargode on Friday to mark the beginning of the Torch Relay, which will see it traverse across the State during the next one week before being carried to light the Games cauldron at the venue of the Opening Ceremony on January 31.

 

The entire State was in sports fervour, and that was why the ‘Run Kerala Run’ received such tremendous support from all sections of society, Mr. Chandy said at the function, attended by senior political leaders and other dignitaries.

 

Water Works Swimming Pool and Tennis practice facility inaugurated

The newly roofed tennis facility at Trivandrum Tennis Club (TTC) and the renovated Water Works swimming pool were inaugurated this week by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

 

Three synthetic courts with lights and high roof will enhance the infrastructure at TTC, which has produced some of the best players in the State and has an ongoing coaching system that introduces the game to a vast number of school children. TTC will be a practice facility for the tennis players. The competition matches would be held at the Kumarapuram complex.

 

United India comes on board as Official Insurance Partner

United India Insurance Co Ltd has won the bid to become the Games’ official insurance partner.
 
The insurance cover, which is a mandatory requirement of the Host City contract signed by the State with the Indian Olympic Association, will include all categories of the population associated with the Games, such as athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators, as well as the various capital assets at the venues and Games Village.
 

Two more Games stadia dedicated to the State

Chief Minister OommenChandy today inaugurated two National Games venues at Thrissur, namely VKN Memorial Indoor stadium, where Judo and Weightlifting competitions are to be held, and Corporation Stadium, where Women’s Football matches are scheduled.
