Run Kerala Run a huge success

Run Kerala Run, the curtain-raiser to the Games, turned out to be a huge success on Tuesday as people of all walks of life thronged the streets to make it a phenomenal success.

 

It was an occasion for the people of the State to join hands and pledge support to the Games being hosted by Kerala for the second time since 1987. From Parassala in the South to Manjeswaram in the North the simultaneous Run, at all its 21 mega points, 226 mini mega points, and over 10,000 ordinary points, attracted extraordnary crowds.

 

Telengana to compete as a separate entity

India's newest State, Telangana will compete as a separate entity in the 35th National Games to be held in Kerala from Jan. 31 to Feb. 14. This was communicated through a letter to the National Games Organising Committee (NGOC) by IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta on Friday. In his letter to the NGOC CEO Jacob Punnoose, Mehta said the decision was based on the numerous representations received by the IOA ever since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

 

Lawn Bowls facility carved out from CIAL Golf course

The new Lawn Bowls court at CIAL Golf Course, Kochi was opened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy last week.

 

The facility for Lawn Bowls has been carved from the vast expanse of the CIAL Golf Course owned by Cochin International Airport Ltd. In addition to the main court of size 1600 sq m, a practise court has also been set up of 400 sqm.

 

Also sometimes called Bowls, it is a regular Olympic sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty".

 

IOA expresses full satisfaction in preparedness

The Indian Olympic Association today allayed all fears about Games preparedness and reiterated that the country’s biggest sporting event will be held as per schedule. K.Murugan, Chairman, Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC), expressed full confidence in the National Games Organising Committee (NGOC) and congratulated the Government’s effort in having made the various Games venues ready in record time.

Accreditation of participants crosses 9500

The total number of accredited athletes is 7464, as per latest online data available. The number of non-playing participants such as Coaches, Team Managers and other supporting officials is 2051, thus making a total of 9515 participants confirmed so far.

 

New Tennis Complex inaugurated, named after Ramanathan Krishnan

The Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the new Tennis Complex at Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday in the presence of legendary tennis player Ramanathan Krishnan, who was the Chief Guest.

24x7 Call Centre becomes operational

A dedicated Call Centre has been established for the Games as the primary information dissemination channel for the public as well as for participants.

 

The Call Centre is accessible through the toll free number 1-800-4250-2015 and through 0471-255-2015 on 24x7 basis. The Call Centre, which became operational on 31st December 2014, would be active till 16th February 2015, two days after the end of the event.

 

Medical coverage tied up on VIK for all venues

Hospitals have been identified at each venue district to act as medical service providers and set up medical facilities with qualified manpower at venues of the Games. MoU is being signed with these service providers by NGS shortly. 

 

The entire support extended by these hospitals during the Games will be totally on a barter arrangement.  They will obtain value in kind (vik) in the form of branding & advertising benefits and status of being the Games’ official medical services provider, as per terms finalised with the Sponsorship team in return for their services.

Overwhelming response from volunteer applicants

The registration for the Games volunteers has seen overwhelming response from the student community. Though the practical exam schedules of the plus-two students during February have cast a shadow, the total online applications touched 7300, far exceeding the total estimated requirement of 4500 volunteers. Online application has since been closed.

 

Kerala gets its first Squash complex

The brand new Squash Courts complex at the Chandrashekharan Nair Stadium, Trivandrum, which will host the Squash competitions of the National Games, was formally dedicated to the State by the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today.

 

The fully air-conditioned indoor squash court is the first of its kind in the State under the public domain. The condominium, which has three courts for singles matches and one court for doubles matches, would be one of the glamour venues of the Games and can accommodate 500 spectators at a time.
