IOA Family

The Indian Olympic Association was formed in 1927 with Sir Dorabji Tata as its first president and since that year has been the body officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee as India's national Olympic organisation.

 

The Indian Olympic Association is the body responsible for selecting athletes to represent India at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and other international athletic meets and for managing the Indian teams at the events. It also acts as the Indian Commonwealth Games Association, responsible for selecting athletes to represent India at the Commonwealth Games.

 

The National Games are also held solely within the jurisdiction of the Indian Olympic Association.

1. Aquatics

 

The Swimming Federation of India (SFI) is affiliated to FINA, the world governing body for the sport. SFI was formed after the amalgamation of its predecessors - the National Swimming Association (NSA) and the Indian Swimming Federation (ISF).

2. Archery

 

Archery Association of India came into existence in 1973.

3. Athletics

 

The Athletics Federation of India is the apex body for running and managing athletics in India and affiliated to the IAAF and AAA. The AFI came into existence in 1946.

4. Badminton

 

Badminton Association of India (BAI) is the governing body for Badminton in India. Based in Lucknow. It was formed in 1934 and has has 33 State Associations and 4 other organizations as its members.

5. Basketball

 

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI came into being in 1950).

6. Boxing

 

Indian Amateur Boxing Federation was founded on February 25, 1949. Mumbai is the headquarters of the body. The first National Championships were held at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in March 1950.

7. Canoe/Kayak

 

Canoeing & Kayaking has 16 medals at Olympics and 35 medals at the Asian Games at stake.

 

Canoeing is a young sport in India which started only in 1986, under the SAI Special Area Games (SAG). Two Water Sport Centers were established in Alleppey and Port Blair because the locals are natural paddlers.

8. Cycling

 

Cycling Federation of India (CFI) is affiliated to the International bodies like Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) and Union Cycliste International (UCI).

9. Fencing

 

Indian Association was founded in 1974, recognized by Government in 1997 and affiliated to the Asian Fencing Confederation, Commonwealth Fencing Federation and Federation International D’Escrime (FIE).

10. Football

 

The All India Football Federation started functioning from its Headquarters, the Football House, Dwarka, New Delhi from 2006. Football House was constructed under FIFA GOAL project and was formally inugurated on April 17, 2007.

11. Gymnastics

 

The Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) came into existence in the year 1951 and is an important unit of the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG), Commonwealth Gymnastics Confederation (CGC) and Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU).

12. Handball

 

The Handball Federation of India (HFI) is the administrative and controlling body for team handball in India. The organisation is a member of the Asian Handball Federation (AHF) and the International Handball Federation (IHF) since 1974.

13. Hockey

 

Hockey India (HI) is the apex body of the country which has the sole mandate to govern and conduct all activities for both men and women hockey in India. It is recognised as National Sports Federation by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India since 28 February 2014 as the sole body responsible towards promoting Hockey in India.

 

Formed on May 20, 2009, it is also affiliated to the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Asian Hockey Federation (AHF).

14. Judo

 

The Judo Federation of India was formed in 1965. During the same year the International Judo Federation gave affiliation to this newly constituted body. The first National Judo Championship was held at Hyderabad in 1966.

15. Rowing

 

The Rowing Federation of India (RFI) was born on August 30th, 1976 and later affiliated with FISA, the International Rowing Federation.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) was formed on April 17, 1951.

17. Table Tennis

 

Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) was established in the year 1926. It is a founder member of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

18. Rugby

 

The Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) is the sole governing body for the sport of Rugby-Football in India. It was founded in 1968 and became affiliated to the International Rugby Board in 1999.

19. Taekwondo

 

Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) was formed and established as a National Body of Taekwondo in India on 2nd Aug, 1976.

 

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) accorded affiliation to the Taekwondo Federation of India in 1978.

20. Tennis

 

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) is the governing body of tennis in India. It was established in 1920 and affiliated by International Tennis Federation and Asian Tennis Federation.

21. Triathlon

 

The Governing Body of Triathlon is the International Triathlon Union (ITU). Founded in Aviagon, France the ITU consists of over 100 member National Federations throughout the world, of which India is a member. The ITU is responsible to their member Federations for the conduct of all triathlons throughout the world with the exception of Ironman events.

Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) is a member organisation of  FIVB (Federation Internationale de Volleyball) as well as of Asian Volleyball Confederation.

23. Weightlifting

 

Indian Weightlifting Federation was formed in 1935. The headquarters of the Indian Weightlifting Federation is in New Delhi. The Federation is affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association (Delhi) and is also a member of Asian Weightlifting Federation (Tehran) and International Weightlifting Federation (Budapest).

The All India Kabaddi Federation was formed in the year 1950 to look after the promotion of the game and the Senior National Championship started from the year 1952. The new body, Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) came in to existence from the year 1972.

29. Netball

 

Netball Federation of India (NFI) is the national governing body of Netball in India. NFI is a non-profit, government funded organisation affiliated with the International Netball Federation (INF), The Asian Federation of Netball Association (AFNA), The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The Yachting Association of India (YAI) was formally constituted on 15 May 1960 The YAI is affiliated to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
